Dearest Unravelers and Unravelers-to-be –
I think one of my favorite messages from you after last week’s newsletter on sex and Gen X was from a mother of three young men (ages 21, 20, 14). Here is only part of what she shared: “Girl. Phew. Glad it’s not just me. My husband these last few months was like ‘WHAT has gotten into you?’... Our sex is more deep, intense and the most mind blowing orgasms… I am living my best life in my 50’s because I am focusing on me, my wants, needs and desires.”
YESSSSSSSS, mama, yes.
(As for the moms who are exhausted just reading that — I see you too.)
I just want to celebrate all of us who are choosing to lean into our bodies and ourselves. I know this is not everyone at this chapter in his or her life. Well known relationship and intimacy psychotherapist Esther Perel often says that desire and sexuality have seasons, much like nature. She talks about how relationships go through cycles—periods of closeness and passion, followed by times of distance or dormancy, and then renewal. There’s a quote that goes something like this: "Desire, like the seasons, must be tended—let it rest in winter, bloom in spring, burn in summer, and transform in autumn."
I get it. And also — I moved to LA last year where winter isn’t much of a thing. 😍
Seriously though, wherever you are, I think talking about it out loud gives us permission (there’s that phrase we so often annoyingly need) to live our best lives, in and out of the bedroom.
Speaking of orgasms (how’s that for a former CNN anchor!), I had a really interesting conversation this week about sex and midlife. My girlfriend and I are possibly the least likely women to be talking out loud about our sex lives — which I think made our conversation all the more fun and honest and real.
And I cannot believe I shared this very specific detail (detailsssss, actually) about my own sex life (total vulnerability hangover afterward, y’all, but I am committed to walking the walk). Here’s some real truthiness.
